Number the pages of a thesis or dissertation

Most universities require numbered pages. If the numbering from your word processor got lost when you assembled the final PDF, you can add it to the PDF itself. PDFly can leave the cover unnumbered and start counting from the number you choose.

Steps

  1. 1

Drop your thesis PDF into PDFly's Page numbers tool.

  2. 2

Choose the position (Bottom center is the classic choice) and the format, for example 1 or Page 1 / 10.

  3. 3

Tick Skip the first page (cover) so the cover stays blank. Start at sets the number printed on page 2: keep 1 if the cover isn't counted, type 2 if it is.

  4. 4

Click Run and download the result. Only the first page can be skipped: if several front pages must stay blank, split them off with Split PDF, number the rest and put them back in front with Merge PDF.
